Body Butter VS Body Lotion

I know many people don’t know but there is a big difference between a body butter and body lotion! Though they are both body moisturisers, body lotion is water-based and works to help bring moisture to your skin. Body butter does not contain any water and is made up of natural butter and oils to lock in the moisture that’s on your skin, that’s why body butter is best used on damp skin.

You may notice that body lotions contain a lot of random ingredients like glycols, glycerine and sodium lactate. These are humectants which draw water from the dermis to the upper layer of your skin, the epidermis, to hydrate your skin. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work well for many of us, once the lotion evaporates from the skin it can cause extra dryness. After an hour or two it’s like you never had any moisturiser on at all!

It’s important to understand the ingredients in your moisturiser, what they are and their function, so you know what works for well for your skin. Body butter contains ingredients such as shea butter, mango butter and cocoa butter which work as an occlusive agent. This means they form a hydrophobic layer on the upper layer of the epidermis to prevent water loss from the skin.

Emollients such as squalene and fatty acids act in a similar way as occlusive agents forming a barrier to prevent water loss as well as replacing natural skin lipids and smoothing roughened skin. Occlusive agents and emollients are much better to use to solve dry skin.

Our body butter is non-greasy and non-comedogenic, so it does not clog pores. It is thick and rich, packed with deeply hydrating natural organic ingredients. Replace refined drying chemicals with our all-natural body butter.
